A Promise Born in Inner-City New York
Dr. Pinkins Empowerment Academy did not begin simply as an organization or program. Its roots can be traced through the life journey of Dr. Armada Pinkins and a promise she made as a young girl growing up in inner-city New York.
Surrounded by poverty, drugs, violence, and limited opportunities, she saw firsthand how environment, relationships, influences, opportunities, and life-changing decisions could affect the direction of a young person's life.
A Childhood Vow
“If I ever get out of here, I'm going to come back and get others out.”
At the time, she could not have known what that promise would eventually mean.
The Power of People Who Care
Dr. Pinkins' story is not simply a story of overcoming difficult circumstances. It is also a story about the transformational power of people who recognize potential and choose to invest in another person's life.
Mother's Sacrificial Love
A hardworking single mother modeled sacrifice, generosity, perseverance, and determination.
Discerning Mentors & Educators
A fourth-grade teacher recognized potential in her. Educators opened doors of opportunity. Caring adults entered her neighborhood to invest love, time, and encouragement.
Growing up on a New York City play street filled with children, she experienced firsthand what it felt like when caring adults intentionally entered a community to encourage and invest in young people.
“Potential is already within a person, but caring relationships, opportunities, guidance, faith, education, and positive experiences can help that potential emerge and develop.”
The Power of People, Places and Opportunities
Dr. Pinkins' development was shaped not only by individuals who invested in her, but also by positive environments and opportunities that gave her places to belong, develop, and discover what she could do.
Growing up, community programs and structured activities provided opportunities for recreation, sports, learning, health services, relationships, and personal development. Through experiences such as organized bowling, she learned discipline, teamwork, healthy competition, perseverance, and the pursuit of excellence—eventually competing in collegiate bowling at the national level.
Early Seeds of Leadership
Even as a child, signs of leadership were beginning to emerge. Her mother remembers watching from their fifth-floor apartment window as young Armada organized the children playing on the street below and instructed them where to stand. Long before there was a title or position, the potential was already there.
People + Places + Opportunities
Children need more than someone telling them what not to do. They need positive places to belong, caring people who recognize their potential, and opportunities to discover what they can do and who they can become.
Crossroads, Choices and Consequences
Dr. Pinkins' journey also exposed her to many of the pressures and crossroads young people continue to face.
She witnessed close childhood friends take very different paths during adolescence. She experienced peer pressure herself and encountered situations involving drugs, relationships, personal safety, and consequential life decisions. Some choices protected the direction of her future. Other choices became sources of painful wisdom and later reflection.
These experiences helped her understand that young people need more than information. They need an inner foundation that can help guide them when parents, teachers, pastors, mentors, and other caring adults are not present:

Integrity, honesty, and Christlike maturity in every situation.
They need Wisdom
Discerning truth from error and choosing God's higher path.

Unwavering trust in God's promises and guiding hand.

Surrounding oneself with uplifting, value-aligned connections.
They need Future-Focused Decisions
The ability to make choices with long-term destiny in mind.
“And when poor decisions have already been made, they need to understand that their story is not over.”
Opportunity and Perseverance
Dr. Pinkins became the first person in her family to finish high school and attend college. Scholarships and grants opened the door, while her mother's sacrifice helped keep that door open when financial circumstances threatened her ability to remain in school.
Recognizing that her mother could not financially support her college journey, she began supporting herself—working full time while attending college full time and participating in five collegiate sports.
During her final two years of college, she also participated in the United States Air Force Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC), preparing to be commissioned into the United States Air Force upon graduation.

From Promise to Calling
Over time, what began as a little girl's promise became a lifelong calling. Her journey would eventually lead into education, ministry, leadership, authorship, mentoring, community service, and empowerment—providing opportunities to invest in children, youth, adults, and families.
The meaning of “coming back to get others out” also grew deeper. It was no longer simply about leaving a particular neighborhood or circumstance.
It became about helping people move beyond:
...and helping them discover what God has already placed within them.
The Promise Continues
Today, through Dr. Pinkins Empowerment Academy, that childhood promise continues. DPEA exists to help individuals discover their identity, purpose, gifts, abilities, and potential; develop from the inside out; overcome challenges; make life-giving choices; and become empowered to positively influence others.
“When someone invests in a life, the impact can extend far beyond that individual. The person who was once helped can eventually become someone who helps others.”
